Our Family Farms has been a cooperative since 1973-74 but we have all been farming for many years before that. Many of us grew up on dairy farms so taking care of cows is in our blood. It's what we do and we do it well.
We still name all of our cows! The cows are like our children, we care for them better than we care for ourselves. Only well-fed, comfortable, healthy cows are productive so we go to great lengths to ensure that each and every one of our girls is not just content but happy! We take such good care of our cows that the life expectancy of an Our Family Farms cow is twice the national average.
Our cows graze lush, green pastures as often as possible in the Spring, Summer and Fall. We make feed during those seasons and store it so that we have plenty of feed for the Winter.
We care about the health of our cows tremendously therefore we have pledged to not use rbST (growth hormones). There is no place for that on our farms!
Every cow has her own personality too. Some like to be rubbed under their chin at every milking, some need to have a conversation with you every time they see you and others feel that giving you a good lick is the best hello first thing in the morning!
As you can see we really care about our cows and we really care about you.
At our Automatic Milking Parlour , our cows are milked by the most advanced machines, and the milk is sent to a bulk cooler then cools the milk down to 4 degrees Celsius – the perfect temperature at which milk is preserved without any degradation. From here, it is transported to a processing unit in insulated tankers. Throughout, it is never touched by human hand.
